Prefabricated natural stone countertops:
The most cost effective way to do stone countertops is to go for prefabricated material. Typically made from Granite slabs these pieces are already cut to standard sizes, polished, and bullnosed. This means that your fabrication and installation cost goes down dramatically compared to getting custom countertops made.

Prefab countertops come in many different colored types of granite. These are just a couple of examples. They come in approx. 8’ long counter depth pieces, matching 6“ backsplashes, island- and peninsula counters. Granite is a dense natural stone. It is relatively resistant to scratching, cracking, and burning. It also is easy to maintain.

Custom natural stone countertops:
You can also purchase natural stone slabs that have not been prefabricated. A fabricator can custom make your countertops exactly to your specification.

Besides granite you can choose from many different types of marble, travertine, and limestone. It is important that you understand that some of these stones might not lend themselves to just any type of application. Porous stones like travertine & limestone are not good for kitchen counters because they will stain easily. They make however beautiful bathroom counters.

There are many different edge details to choose from. You can decide how thick your edges should be. You can choose whether you want your stone to have a polished or honed finish. A honed finish is still smooth but matte. All natural stone surfaces have to be sealed for protection. This process should be repeated once a year since sealant will wear off with time.

Caesar Stone & Silestone:
These two brands are both man made surfacing products. They consist to more than 90% of natural quartz aggregate. Quartz happens to be one of nature’s hardest materials. Color, pigment, and polyester resin are added.

The result is a countertop material that is impervious to stain. It withstands heat, chipping, scratching and cracking. It is also resistant to mold. In fact it is so durable that both come with 10 year warranties. Caesar Stone will guarantee both material and installation, while Silestone only gives a warranty on the material. Both brands offer a large selection of colors. Below are just a few examples of Caesar Stone. There are many more. Some colors are available in both polished and honed finishes.

Like natural stone, Caesar Stone and Silestone, come in slabs. The fabricator should have some experience working with these materials since they are harder than natural stone and need to be handled differently. In the case of Caesar Stone the fabricator has to be licensed by Caesar Stone. After installation these countertops are very easily maintained. No sealing is required.
